Youth Program - Schedule & Registration
Covid-19 Impact on Programming
April 16, 2020
Hello Everyone,
I have a great many email inquiries in my inbox regarding the youth program, and I deeply appreciate the patience of those of you who have been awaiting my response for quite some time. A large portion of my appointed position as Head of Instruction with the Sailing Club has been reassigned this semester to aid with UW-Madison’s Covid-19 response, leaving me little time to keep up with emails.
I can’t begin to tell you how delighted I am to hear that so many of your children are excited to get back to sailing – overseeing the Youth Program and getting to work with your children is one of my favorite parts of my job and we deeply missed having them around the lakefront last summer.
I know many of you are planning summer activities for your children and are wondering about the status of our Youth Sailing Program for this coming summer. I’ve spent much of the last few months redeveloping our curricula and policies to make them more Covid safe, and to assure they are in compliance with restrictions from Dane County. However, the Office of Youth Protection and Compliance (OYPC), which oversees all UW-System-sanctioned activities that involve minors, has yet to make a decision regarding whether or not to permit in-person youth activities for the summer of 2021. Youth programming will also need to be approved by the individual campuses where they occur, in our case that of UW-Madison. In other words, I am currently waiting on a yes/no from both OYPC and the UW-Madison campus. Assuming approval comes from both, the Sailing Club will host its Youth Program this summer, and sign-ups will occur in the usual manner through our RecHub software. However, if in-person youth programming is prohibited by either or both of those bodies we will not be able operate Youth Sailing this summer. I have been led to believe that those decisions will be made in the near future, sometime within the next few weeks. Thank you again for your patience. It is my sincere hope that we will be able to operate our Youth Program, but I do not know how those decisions will turn out.
As soon as we know with certainty either way, I will post an update on this page.
If you have any questions or please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Warmly,
Mills Botham
