If you haven't tried windsurfing yet, you don't know what you're missing. You won't get closer to feeling the wind and water!
Anyone can learn to windsurf! Strength and balance are only part of the equation... all it really takes is persistance and determination. Our enthusiastic instructors can teach you how to choose the proper equipment so that you can become a rockstar and enjoy the variety of conditions Lake Mendota has to offer.
New to the sport? Don't worry - many of our club members are. You will undoubtedly find yourself craving a windy day soon after your first lesson. New students generally earn a rating after 2-4 three-hour lessons in good conditions. Remember, if you're not falling in, you're not getting any better!
The Hoofers windsurfing fleet is made up of a large variety of sails and boards. Sails range in size from 2.3 to 8.0 (measured in square meters); our most popular sizes run anywhere from a 4.0 to a 6.6. Boards range in volume and size from wide, stable boards that make learning a breeze, to small, "sinker" boards that allow you to get out in the windiest conditions.
This fun-loving, enthusiastic bunch wants to help you succeed on the water and have a blast while doing it!
If you're a novice, we'll give you some basic sailing theory on land and a brief orientation with our dry simulator before anyone gets wet... but the real emphasis is on-the-water fun! Take as many lessons as you want or need.
If you already have some experience, ask about fast-tracking to move up through the ratings. Then, take some of our more advanced lessons, like shortboards, freestyle, and special topics!
