The heavy keelboat fleet offers students a unique perspective of sailing as compared to the other
Hoofer fleets. The variety of boats in our fleet will give you confidence to sail on many boats when
you venture outside the shores of Lake Mendota!

Many of our students want to learn the skills necessary to:

  • Own and maintain their own boats
  • To effectively sail a larger boat with a crew
  • Be able to charter a boat in the great lakes, the Caribbean or beyond
  • Sail around the world!

  • Lessons on the Heavy Keelboat Fleet will focus on various skills such as boat handling, operating under diesel engine power, boat systems, parts of the boat, knots, navigation, seamanship, towing a keelboat, motor landings, anchoring, tying at the pier, spring lines, use of a winch, landing a motorboat at a mooring, spinnaker, etc...

The Heavy Keelboat fleet relies on our members to donate their time and expertise to maintaining our fleet both during the sailing season and during the winter months. Volunteer help is always appreciated to help our boats stay in “ship –shape” condition!
